High-end Wet Wipes Make a Tentative Appearance, Online Sales Growing Rapidly

In recent years, wet wipes have been gaining more and more attention as consumers become more interested in quality of life and as major brands launch more new products. Wet wipes are more powerful in cleaning, more effective in removing bacteria and are also softer, giving them a distinct advantage over traditional dry wipes.

Wet wipes are generally made from raw materials such as wood pulp fibres and cellulose fibres and are produced using a wet spunlaced nonwoven process to ensure that the product is easily flushable. Currently, there are two types of wet wipes on the market, flushable and non-flushable. Flushable wet wipes are those that can be flushed down directly into the toilet after use, without blocking the downpipe. This is where the technical difficulties lie. The flushability of a product can be achieved by reducing the size of the product, and biodegradability may be acquired by the use of biodegradable fibers, but the use characteristics of flushable wet wipes require a balance between the wet strength and flushability of the base material: on the one hand, it must meet the consumer's requirements for strength, and not be easily broken when used, and on the other hand, it needs to be dispersible after being flushed down the toilet. There are two types of base materials for wet wipes on the Chinese market: wood pulp spunlaced nonwovens and dry paper. The chemical composition of the raw material for both dry and wood pulp spunlaced nonwovens is cellulose fiber and the properties are basically similar. Both get their flushability by using a high proportion of wood pulp fibers and their strength through binders or viscose fibers. In addition to the specificity of the base material, wet wipes also require improvements in production equipment and processes due to the differences in wet strength and other aspects from those of ordinary wipes. When producing wet wipes with a lower wet strength than ordinary wipes, the packaging equipment and folding equipment must be adapted to the new characteristics and lessen the problems of breakage due to the high traction strength.

Wet wipes is actually not a new product in the global market and has a high penetration rate in developed countries, with many households in developed countries in Europe and America using wet wipes. Compared to traditional paper towels, wet wipes offer more advantages, and the consumption of the product is growing faster. At present, wet wipe products are mainly high-end, with high-end products accounting for more than 74% in 2021 and the growth rate of high-end product online consumption amounting to 63%.
