International Women's Day - Caring for Women

International Women's Day is an international holiday celebrated on March 8 each year in honor of the women's rights movement. This day is also a legal holiday in many countries. International Women's Day is also a day when societies celebrate the important contributions made by women in the economic, political and social spheres. The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1975, recognizing the tradition of ordinary women's struggle for equal participation in society, and in 1997 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in which it invited each country to choose a day of the year to be declared the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and World Peace, in keeping with its own historical and national traditions and customs. The UN initiative established a national legal framework for achieving equality between men and women and raised public awareness of the urgent need for the advancement of women in all aspects. In 1949, the Central People's Government of China made a decision to designate the 8th of March as Women's Day, which was observed by women throughout the country with a half-day holiday and various forms of commemorative activities were held throughout the country.
