Poor Performance in Peak Season, South East Asia Shipping Rates Fall Back!

According to container shipping companies, the fourth quarter of 2022 will be a peak season for Southeast Asian routes.

On September 16, the lowest freight rate of the year of US$95 per container (20-foot container) was recorded in the Southeast Asia Freight Index (SEAFI) on the Vietnam route, when the market was rumored to have zero freight rate, and shipping companies made up for the freight loss by charging low-sulphur fuel surcharge of US$96 or US$93 and container yard operation fee, document fee, etc. Following the arrival of the traditional peak season on the Asian route, the freight rate started to recover.

On October 28, the freight rate of Vietnam route returned to US$197 per container, and US$232 for Thailand route, US$329 for Singapore route, US$121 for Philippines route, US$311 for Malaysia route and US$428 for Indonesia route; on November 25, the freight rate of Vietnam route fell back to US$144, with US$200 for Thailand route, US$231 for Singapore route, US$104 for Philippines route, US$207 for Malaysia route and US$359 for Indonesia route.

According to information from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, the ongoing order shortage has affected more than 630,000 workers in 28 provinces and cities in Vietnam from September to November, with nearly 570,000 workers having their working hours cut, more than 34,000 workers losing their jobs and more than 31,000 workers having their labor contracts suspended or taking unpaid leave.
